Hi, I’m Kylie Walsh. A passionate and motivated Australian trained non-physician osteopath now setting up life in the bay area of California. Passionate! About what you ask…..Osteopathy!! That tongue twisting word that you most likely haven’t heard before and aren’t sure what it is but seems vaguely to be about ahhh……bones……osteo doesn’t that mean bones?!!
YES. Osteo means bones but what is Osteopathy and how can it help me?
Osteopathy is about bones and their positioning in the body. All tissues of the body have a specific purpose and position, this is the corner stone of optimal health, well-being and function. When there is a deviation from normal within the structure of the body, the body must compensate. This is the struggle we feel, the aches and pains, the restlessness, the exhaustion, the moodiness, the list of symptoms is endless. It is the osteopaths job to search the body and find the problem, the cause, the deviation from normal that has caused these symptoms and impeded the body from healing itself. When the cause is found the tissues responsible are brought back into balance with the rest of the body, supporting and encouraging the body’s self healing mechanism.
A.T Still, MD and the founder of osteopathy way back in the late 1800’s, was disheartened by medicine and went in search for an alternative. The beginning of osteopathy is the understanding that the body can heal itself when in the right environment. Osteopathy is a philosophy, a holistic way of interacting with the body and assisting in its healing.
A treatment with an Osteopath will vary depending on your practitioner, the principles of osteopathy should not! I choose a very gentle approach to care. Always listening to the body, supporting, guiding and encouraging the body back into balance with the health, the bodies innate healing capacity. This innate healing ability is a force that is present with us from conception, an embryological force that is guiding growth and development and powerful in our healing when this is not free to transform traumas and injuries the body becomes stuck, held up and the symptoms begin to arise.
I have found greater understanding of traditional osteopathy through post graduate study in the biodynamic approach to cranial osteopathy as taught by Dr James Jealous and his faculty. This is an extremely gentle yet powerful approach to treatment. Its gentle nature means it is appropriate for all ages, from newborns to the elderly and is aimed at supporting the body in achieving a deep rest, this level of balance and rest allows the body’s innate capacity to heal to be brought into the foreground and allows for the body to begin its healing on all levels involving all systems. In my opinion the principles and philosophy of osteopathy means that there is no problem too much. If you are suffering from any aches or pains osteopathic treatment may be able to support you on your journey to good health and well-being.
I love osteopathy and all it has to offer the evolving and healing individual. No matter your complaint, complex and chronic or acute and simple. I look forward to meeting you and assisting you as best I can. You are able to find more information at kyliewalshosteo.com.
