West Oakland Community Holistic Clinic & Cafe

GROW promo edit.jpg

Every second Saturday

Saturday, December 9th

NEW TIME: 12 p.m.- 5p.m.

Location:

GROW Incubator

909 7th Street, Lower Bottoms, Oakland

West Oakland Holistic Community Clinic will now be every second Saturday of the month! Hosted now by Oakland OMNI Commons, they will be opening the space up for us to facilitate a day devoted to offering: low-cost and no-one-turned-away-for-lack-of-funds (NOTAFLOF) holistic wellness services.

We are still in need of more healers and therapists to join us, helping give healing sessions to those communities and persons who continue to be marginalized. We hope to be able to to offer a wide variety of healing modalities and therapies.

Currently our most heavily utilized modality is Massage Therapy of various styles. We also currently offer: energy-work, cranial-sacral, herbalism, empathic listening, mediation, talk-therapy, narcan rescue kit and harm reduction training, leather and boot repair, Tui Nai, and Qigong.

We are seeking acupuncturists and various other modalities and workshop facilitators. Finding and giving space to Oakland based healers and therapists is also a priority to us.

We provide a free hot meal, receive and give out other food donations, clothing, books, and hygiene products. You can donate any of these things or volunteer your time in making these aspects of the project come alive. We will also accept monetary donations to pay for the space and to cover some small other expenses in first getting this up and running.

All are  welcome to come out to just enjoy the community meal, good conversation, take and leave donations, and read the books in the resource library.

Please contact us at with all inquires: WestOaklandClinic@gmail.com

We will continue updating this blog and add information about the therapists who are participating, and what they will be offering.

Keep checking in and help spread the word!

Warmly,

WOCHC Crew

Happy New Year! 2019 We made it!

Dear Community,

I am writing a new post because well it is a new year and it has been way too long! Our clinic is approaching it’s third full year operating and half a year at Qilombo.

Our next clinic is  January 12th and is always the SECOND Saturday of the month from 12-5 PM. All donations go directly to Qilombo and Afrikatown Garden. On that note donations have been low, as we are mostly working on the people who are most marginalized and poor in our community. Donating directly to the space is most helpful as we are not able to give them money towards rent and utilities. You can find links at their website: http://qilombo.org/

We will be planning a fundraiser soon and hope to see some of you there to meet us, enjoy, music, some chair massage, and more! Another way to help out is to just spread the word to those you love and care about and meet in the streets around Oakland.

For all inquires and to get involved or offer a healing modality please email us at westoaklandclinic@gmail.com. We specifically seek locals and Black and Brown healers, but we also consider everyone!

New Modality: Australian Osteopathy

Hi, I’m Kylie Walsh. A passionate and motivated Australian trained non-physician osteopath now setting up life in the bay area of California. Passionate! About what you ask…..Osteopathy!! That tongue twisting word that you most likely haven’t heard before and aren’t sure what it is but seems vaguely to be about ahhh……bones……osteo doesn’t that mean bones?!!

YES. Osteo means bones but what is Osteopathy and how can it help me?

Osteopathy is about bones and their positioning in the body. All tissues of the body have a specific purpose and position, this is the corner stone of optimal health, well-being and function. When there is a deviation from normal within the structure of the body, the body must compensate. This is the struggle we feel, the aches and pains, the restlessness, the exhaustion, the moodiness, the list of symptoms is endless. It is the osteopaths job to search the body and find the problem, the cause, the deviation from normal that has caused these symptoms and impeded the body from healing itself. When the cause is found the tissues responsible are brought back into balance with the rest of the body, supporting and encouraging the body’s self healing mechanism.

A.T Still, MD and the founder of osteopathy way back in the late 1800’s, was disheartened by medicine and went in search for an alternative. The beginning of osteopathy is the understanding that the body can heal itself when in the right environment. Osteopathy is a philosophy, a holistic way of interacting with the body and assisting in its healing.

A treatment with an Osteopath will vary depending on your practitioner, the principles of osteopathy should not! I choose a very gentle approach to care. Always listening to the body, supporting, guiding and encouraging the body back into balance with the health, the bodies innate healing capacity. This innate healing ability is a force that is present with us from conception, an embryological force that is guiding growth and development and powerful in our healing when this is not free to transform traumas and injuries the body becomes stuck, held up and the symptoms begin to arise.

I have found greater understanding of traditional osteopathy through post graduate study in the biodynamic approach to cranial osteopathy as taught by Dr James Jealous and his faculty. This is an extremely gentle yet powerful approach to treatment. Its gentle nature means it is appropriate for all ages, from newborns to the elderly and is aimed at supporting the body in achieving a deep rest, this level of balance and rest allows the body’s innate capacity to heal to be brought into the foreground and allows for the body to begin its healing on all levels involving all systems. In my opinion the principles and philosophy of osteopathy means that there is no problem too much. If you are suffering from any aches or pains osteopathic treatment may be able to support you on your journey to good health and well-being.

I love osteopathy and all it has to offer the evolving and healing individual. No matter your complaint, complex and chronic or acute and simple. I look forward to meeting you and assisting you as best I can. You are able to find more information at kyliewalshosteo.com.
